Open interest (OI)

The total value of derivatives contracts currently open and not yet closed.

Open interest is the total number or value of futures contracts that are currently open and have not been settled or closed. Rising open interest means new money is entering positions; falling open interest means positions are being closed. Read alongside price, it shows whether a move is backed by fresh positioning or just position-closing.
