Positioning & flow · Chapter 12 of 31
What are whale trades?
Unusually large individual trades that can signal informed intent, and how their net direction reads.
A whale trade is a single order large enough to stand out from ordinary retail activity. We flag trades above a notional size so the big prints are easy to spot.
Size can mean intent
Large players often have better information or stronger conviction. A cluster of big buys or sells can front-run a move that smaller traders only see later.
Net flow over single prints
One large trade can be noise or a hedge. What matters more is the net direction of whale flow over a window, which shows where big money is leaning.
How to read it here
We surface large trades and their net flow. Treat a strong one-sided flow as a clue about positioning, not a guarantee of direction.
