VN-Index, VN30, and HNX-Index

The benchmarks that track the Vietnamese market, and how a broad index differs from a blue-chip one.

An index is a single number that summarises a whole market or a slice of it. Vietnam's headline benchmark is the VN-Index, which tracks every stock listed on HOSE.

VN-Index vs VN30

The VN-Index is broad: it moves with the entire HOSE board and is weighted by company size, so the largest firms sway it most. The VN30 is narrower, following the 30 biggest, most-liquid blue chips.

HNX-Index and others

The HNX board has its own HNX-Index, and there are sector and thematic indices too. Each answers a different question about the market.

Why it matters

The VN-Index tells you the market's overall mood, while the VN30 shows how the heavyweight names are doing. Watching both gives a fuller picture.
